New rules when into affect early December. Now if you arrive in Thailand by air you will get 30 days if you are from a western country which an agreement for the visa exempt status. Some countries even longer. After that you can do visa runs, but the new rule states you will only get 15 days if you use ground transportation to enter the country and 30 days if you arrive by air transportation.

Tourist Visa 30 days on air entry
15 days on land entry
Non b Visa 90 days, then leave the country ,and enter again with a new stamp
.(best option these days for longer stays now the tourist visa rules have altered again.)
